Simple Tips for Attending Agency Open Casting Calls

 Looking for agency representation , it is important to know that not all agencies are the same or look for the same things. During your search make it a point to submit yourself according to each agency's preferences. Doing otherwise will more than likely send your submission into the garbage.

It is especially crucial to follow the rules at an open call in order to put yourself on the agency's good side. Remember, part of being a good model is having the ability to follow directions. If you can't fulfill the requirements for an open casting call, this makes a bad first impression and could lead the agency staff to believe that you don't follow directions well and are not woth the time .

1. First ,make sure the agency holds open casting calls : Not all agencies have open calls. The best way to find this information is to check the official website for the modeling agency. Any details about casting calls will be listed if they are offered or the agency may state that they don't hold open casting calls. If there is no mention at all, than this likely a sign that they don't do Open calls.

2. Read all the info and follow through: Again, good models and actors follow directions. Never blindly attend a casting call. Always, always, always check the website of the modeling agency to find out how they conduct their open calls, when, during what times and note what you will need to bring. Following the instructions for an agency's open casting call will put you ahead and make things much smoother for the agency.

3. Make sure you show up on the right day at the right times: Each modeling agency has its casting calls on certain days of the week. The time frame for most casting calls is two hours.

4. Always be early : Casting calls are typically held during specific time frames and if you happen to be considering a prominent agency, you can expect a lot of people to show up. Being right on time or late will put you at the end of the line and if you don't make it into the agency's office by the time the casting is done, you'll be turned away--even though you were already there.

5. Don't bring a group of people with you: If you are under the age of 18, then you must have a parent/guardian with you at the time of the casting call. No exceptions. Bring only one parent . Model hopefuls 18 years of age and older should arrive to the casting call by yourself or with one additional person who will not be a distraction.

6. Dress for success: Attending an open casting call is your opportunity for the agency to meet you as you are. The purpose is for them to get to know you briefly and evaluate your potential. You are NOT there to show off your favorite haute couture threads or other fancy outfits. Some agency websites give advice as to what male and female models should wear to casting calls. If such information is available, follow it very carefully.

If your not sure , then you can't go wrong with dark skinny jeans, heels and a solid colored, form fitting tank top or t-shirt (for the ladies) or dark, comfortable jeans, clean shoes and a form fitting t-shirt or tank top (for the guys). Arrive with your hair out of your face and a clean complexion with little to no makeup.

7. Be prepared to wait: Since it can take a while to get through everyone, be prepared to keep you occupied. Word to the wise: there is a difference between being "occupied" and being "distracted". Complex texting, playing games on your phone, talking on the phone, doing homework, etc. should be avoided since they tend to draw all of your attention, which could allow you to miss an important announcement, hearing your name/number being called or any other part of the process. Additionally, you want to show the agency that they have your attention--doing otherwise may make you seem like you've got better things to do than be at the casting call, which makes for a very negative first impression.

8. Make sure you have fun: The most important tip of all...being in the office of a modeling agency is exciting so use that positive energy to show the staff a bubbly, outgoing, genuine personality. Don't be a kiss up or overwhelm them with "OMG" statements about how much you love their agency, their models, etc. The casting call is for you to shine so listen to the agency, answer their questions to the best of your ability and of coarse smile!

So you want to be a singer ? 

If you love to sing and believe that you have what it takes to sing professionally, here are a few simple steps to jump start your singing career.

Develop your repertoire. Be able to sing hit songs in your genre, and try other genres to increase your likelihood of getting gigs. You can also write original songs that flatter your singing voice.

Then develop your own unique style and don't inmate other already famous singers. (it's good to pick up a few things from them, but don't sound exactly like them)

Check your newspaper's classified ads craigslist, Facebook to see if any bands are advertising for a lead or backup singer.

Ask to sit in on a band's rehearsal and sing lead or backup for them. Audition for singing jobs in local recording studios. Start small and work your way up.

Take voice lessons. Hire a voice teacher or vocal coach to help develop your singing voice to its full potential. Practice any exercises that your coach gives you.If that is not an option there are plenty self taught audio courses u can buy for a reasonable price .

Develop an image. Think about how you want to look in front of an audience and develop a look that's uniquely yours. Take publicity photos of yourself or your band that showcase your image.

Record a demo CD. Recruit the best musicians in your area and put together a demo of 1 or 2 songs. Keep copies of your CD with you at all times, especially when you're singing at a gig. A professional recording studio is the best place, but if you can't afford to do that (most can't when they first start) there are alot of computer programs u can download for free that allow u to record onto your computer and add effect and mix and master it and it will sound somewhat professional if you know what you are doing, but most are pretty easy to use just for recording purposes.

 But before you mail copies of your demo to record companies or to other singers that you admire it is VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE UR OWN MATERIAL.You need to have original songs. Most record labels won't take the time to listen to a demo full of covers (songs already made famous by someone else). So one way to do this is either write material yourself if u can. Like if u play the piano or guitar. Write some songs. Or if u know how to make beats or someone who does. Some people charge for the rights to a beat or song (usually for $25 to even $1000 and up). There are also websites where u can get beats for free from up and coming producers who offer a free download of there beat to use on your demo or any other non profit project. To use the beat on a cd u going to sell u will have to buy the rights to it or if u have a friend or someone u know that can write music, and lyrics collaborate w/them.

The only labels that accept "unsolicited materials are usually indie labels or ones that specifically say they will accept unsolicited material . A good thing to do is call and ask. Perform as often as possible. Open Mic's , Join a choir, sing in church, front a band or perform at a local fair. Performing often will increase your confidence in front of a mic.

There are also plenty of websites that you can post music on and have people comment, download and listen to your music, and a lot of them are free. These sites are also good to hook up with other people that love music too. Like up and coming producers, songwriters, and singers that might be interested in collaborating with u if they like ur music. This is good for networking and meeting people that might possibly be the key to getting where you want to be

Set up a website. Include photos, a bio, a touring schedule and maybe a blog. Allow your fans to download free copies of some of your songs from the website. Share your performance footage. Post videos of your performances on YouTube and share the links on Facebook or Twitter. You never know who might stumble across your performance.

Should an actor, model ,singer or dancer have a Business plan ?

I think that perhaps career *goals* is a better way to put it.We all know that, acting can be an extremely uncertain career path, but without a clear goal to work toward, or an idea of what steps can put you closer to your goal it seems to me that acting would end up being an extremely discouraging career path.

Artist be they actors , models , dancers singers or any other type of talent often have trouble grasping the business end  of "the business". With many being wed to the "starving artist" stereo type .

My experience has taught me that "artistic types " of personalities often have difficulty forming career goals and a career strategy  The bad news is that those who masetre the business side of things are often the most successful.

Acting and modeling are not any different from any other profession and It is always best to have plans or goals to give you something to strive to attain and achieve.

Even something as simple as: 'I want to work on television', or 'I'd like to become a member of a theatre company' can help Keep you  focused and push you to make decisions that are in line with where you want your career to go.

It is best however to set goals the focus on actions you are going to take with a specific time limit  I am going to take  a specific acting class or I am going to a certain number of auditions  each month . I am going to update my resume and credits ,I am going to learn a new monologue .

Goal give you a way to measure your progress .

Goals focused on actions  and not results put you in the drivers seat .and always remember to have fun in the process. If you aren't enjoying the process then look for another profession.
